You can blame it on Croatia.
Back in the early seventeenth century, Croatian military men sported fancy neckerchiefs about their neck – the color of which signified a man’s rank in the army – which subsequently lead to the hanging of poor Juan Seguara who had inadvertently neglected to salute his general.
Which subsequently lead to the discovery of color-blindness – or as it use to be known as – a case of the old Juan-Seguaro-itis.
Of course, some folks would hang the blame on old Shih Huang Ti, China’s first emperor back in 221 B.C. – the fellow who became famous as the world’s hoarder of terracotta figurines – and I’m not talking Royal Doulton here!
Now – if you were to release an e-book this month – say some sort of mystery called THE CASE OF THE TERRACOTTA CAT’S CRAVAT – well then you might do really well – just because you were releasing during National Necktie Month.
Now you might actually have KNOWN that it was National Necktie Month – but you also might just be laboring under a severe case of pure dumb luck.
So let me tell you how my weekend promotion has fared so far.
First off – you folks who have been following my blog might already know that my Bigfoot novel, BIG HAIRY DEAL, has been available as a freebie giveaway since Thursday.
On Thursday I gave away 260 free copies of BIG HAIRY DEAL. Friday was 183 free copies – or 443 in total. Saturday slowed down to 57 freebies – bringing it to an even 500 free copies. Yesterday was 42 free copies and I have given away 3 this morning.
This is my last free giveaway of BIG HAIRY DEAL. As of December 29th the book will no longer be a part of the Kindle Select and Kindle Unlimited program. The time has run out and I have chosen not to re-enter this program on the grounds that my Kobo sales STILL make me more money.
I haven’t given up totally on Kindle – because there is still an AWFUL lot of money to made through Amazon sales -but Jeff Bezos has not seen fit to smile on me just yet.
I’ll keep figuring and trying new approaches – but for now I need to get this book into Kobo. So come early January this book will be out on Kobo.
I have also quietly launched two other freebie promotions.
My redneck noir novella, HAMMURABI ROAD is available as a freebie for today and tomorrow. By early next week this book will be out of the Kindle Select and back up on Kobo.
I moved 280 freebie copies of HAMMURABI ROAD yesterday and 17 today, so far.
My short novel, TROLLING LURES, which pits the Trickster Coyote up against an honest-to-Odin Norse Troll is also available for free on Kindle and will be back up on Kobo by the second week of December.
I moved 66 freebie copies of Trolling Lures yesterday and 1 copy today, so far.
In total these last few days I have moved 918 freebie copies on Kindle – and throughout the entire weekend I have learned ONE important fact.
In order to sell more books an indie writer needs GREAT COVERS, GOOD PROMOTION, WORD OF MOUTH, and a tinfoil hat.
That’s right. There is ALWAYS going to be that certain undefinable element of pure random dumb luck
Maybe I should have worn a necktie.
Come tomorrow I will tell you all about my new plan of action.
I might even wear a necktie while I am at it.
yours in storytelling,
