Hal-Con 2014 Science Fiction Convention

I am getting VERY stoked up about Hal-Con Sci-Fi/Fantasy Convention this weekend.

The event starts on Friday noon and goes right through until Sunday. Nimbus Publishing will be set up on the SECOND floor – tables 239 and 240.

I am definitely going to be there for most of Saturday – at the Nimbus table signing and selling books. I will be splitting the time with at least one other Nimbus author that weekend and we will have a great assortment of Nimbus books for you to choose from.

I have been involved with Hal-Con way back when it first started back in the 70’s. It was a relatively small event back then although it got a lot of local publicity – because back then the idea of a science-fiction ANYTHING happening in Halifax was pretty big news.

I was never part of the organization but was often invited as a local writer – and sometimes I just went and played.

Well, this new incarnation – this reboot of Hal-Con is freaking huge. It has REALLY taken off and brings a lot of people into Halifax from all over the country. I am REALLY looking forward to taking part this year.

Let me give you folks a few tips about attending Hal-Con – keeping in mind that I have NEVER been a part of this exciting new event.

1 – Wear comfortable shoes. You are going to be looking at a lot of line-ups and a lot of milling and a lot of standing and gawking. There is an awful lot to see and you won’t want to miss a second.

2 – Stay hydrated. People who go too long without water tend to get cranky, dizzy, weak, unfriendly and miserable. No one wants to miserable.

3 – You have GOT to try the Garrison Klingon Ale!

I don’t know if it is going to be available at the convention – but Garrison is brewing this up and it will be available through Garrison and other specialty liquor outlets.

4 – Bring money. You are GOING to want to buy something.

5 – Bring a camera. Check your batteries. Bring extra batteries.

6 – Keep your eyes open. Stop checking your texts. There is going to be an awful lot to see and you will not want to miss a single moment.

7 – Pack lightly. Or bring along a friend as a sherpa.

8 – Take some time to study the schedule. Anticipate delays and get an idea where you want to be at any point in time. Make a schedule. Expect more delays. Have you ever tried to walk upstream against the force of about two hundred people walking in the other direction?

9 – Keep your pass handy and visible. Security is watching. DON’T get in an argument with security.

10 – Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

yours in storytelling,

Steve Vernon
